Lampard Backs Record Signing Caleb Yirenkyi for ‘Big Career’ Following Standout Debut
By The Sports Desk | August 15, 2026
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard praised club-record signing Caleb Yirenkyi, predicting a "big career" for the 20-year-old midfielder following his standout debut in a 2-0 pre-season victory over AS Monaco on Friday.
Yirenkyi, who joined the Sky Blues last week from Danish side FC Nordsjælland for an initial €27 million (£26 million), was thrust immediately into the starting XI for Coventry's final pre-season tune-up. The Ghanaian international delivered an immediate return on investment, dictating the midfield tempo and providing a crucial assist for Loum Tchaouna’s goal.
The £26 million fee represents not only a record outlay for the newly promoted Premier League side but also the highest transfer fee ever received by a Scandinavian club.
"We Sold the Project to Him"
Speaking to the media post-match, Lampard highlighted the intense competition to secure the highly sought-after midfielder and expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition.
"We got a lot of belief in Caleb here; he is a player that we are very happy to have brought to the club," Lampard said. "He was wanted by many clubs around Europe. We sold the project to him."
A product of the Right to Dream Academy, Yirenkyi arrives in England with a burgeoning reputation, having already secured 15 caps for the Black Stars. His seamless transition against top-flight French opposition bodes well for Coventry as they prepare for the rigors of the Premier League.
Looking Ahead to the Premier League
Lampard emphasized that Friday's performance is just the beginning for the young Ghanaian, noting his high ceiling for development in English football.
"He is a good, talented player and young," Lampard added. "We believe he is going to have a big career. He is a big addition to the club, and we saw signs against Monaco, and hopefully, we see a lot more."
Yirenkyi is expected to be in contention to make his official Premier League debut when Coventry City travels to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on August 21.
